Does memorial day affect trash pickup? Well, if you’re struggling with this question, you’re not alone.

Before we guide you in detail and talk about memorial day trash pickup, here’s a quick answer to, “Do they pick up trash on memorial day?”

Trash collection is delayed and pushed to the next working day on a memorial day. It is a statutory holiday, and in most cities, it will impact the curbside residential collection.

Pretty simple, Right? Well, I wish it was the case. But in 2023, several cities’ garbage collection was not delayed, including OKC trash pickup, Portland, and Jacksonville. 

So, will there be any collection on memorial day in 2024? Let’s find out!

1. Memorial Day Trash Pickup 2024

In most cities, there will be no waste and recycling collection on memorial day 2024. This year it will be observed on Monday, 27th of May. So, in general, the whole week will be affected.

Here is your garbage collection schedule for the memorial week:

• No collection on Monday.
• Monday pickup will be pushed to Tuesday.
• Tuesday’s collection will be picked up on Wednesday.
• Wednesday pickup is delayed and pushed to Thursday.
• Thursday collection will happen on Friday.
• Friday pickup will be moved to Saturday.

As for the rule of thumb, trash pickup is only delayed by one day. So, there is no need to worry. All you need to do is roll-out carts on the curb the next day.

2. Waste Management Pickup On Memorial Day

As per the waste management holiday schedule, there will be no trash pickup on memorial day 2024. So, don’t worry about rolling carts to the cub on May 27th.

Keep in mind that the memorial day holiday is only for the USA. If you’re living in Canada, your trash day will not be affected.

Cities that have private contracts with WM, like San Antonio and NYC, will inform residents through a text message or update through the trash app at least 24 hours prior to the collection day.

3. Republic Trash Pickup On Memorial Day

With 343 collection centers in 40 states, republic services is one of the biggest trash collection companies in North America. We reach out to their customer service, and here’s what they have told us:

“Republic services honor all of the heroes who died while defending the country. In this respect, we don’t run any operations on the memorial day. As per the collection schedule, it is pushed to the next working day.”

4. Need To Dispose Trash Urgently On Memorial Day? What Should I Do?

If you’ve got a lot of trash that you need to dispose of urgently, then you have only two options:

1. Self-Service At Nearest Landfill
2. Hiring A Private Junk Hauler

Usually, while hiring a private hauler, you need to book an appointment prior to 48 hours at least. But local city haulers can come on short notice too. Let’s discuss both options briefly.

Self Service At The Nearest Landfill And Collection Centers

Landfills and collection centers remain open on all holidays. You can drive there and drop off refuse recyclables or large items, paying a small fee. Before you go to the landfill, remember two things:

• No help will be provided while unloading the trash.
• You must have identity proof.

Collection centers usually charge $5 to $10 for 20 lbs weight. Moreover, household hazardous waste and appliances with refrigerants are not allowed.

5. Hiring A Private Hauler

This might be an expensive option. But, with a hauler, you don’t have to worry about all the dirt and hard work. All you need to do is hire them, and they will do the rest of the work.

On an urgent basis, a local junk hauler can charge anywhere between $800 to $950, depending on the weight and size of the trash pile. The landfill fee is included in it.
