  • Detroit waste management starts collecting residential garbage by 07:00 am on your assigned day.

3. Detroit Bulk Pickup

To dispose of your bulky items, all city residents have three options.


Here’s what you need to know:

  • Free 2-cubic yards are allowed every other week
  • Special pickup can also be arranged for a fee
  • You can also drop off large items at landfill locations

When Is Detroit Bulk Day? Bulky items are collected on the same day as your garbage pickup. All residents must put their large items to the curb by 07:00 am.

You can drop off up to 1000 pounds per person per day at any location. Keep in mind that, in order to enter a location, you must have proper proof of residency. 

Acceptable Items For Detroit Bulk Pickup:

Clothing items, toys, lamps, broken furniture, carpeting, small appliances, mattresses, and water tanks are accepted.

5. Yard Waste Removal Detroit


Yard waste is only collected for 36 weeks around the year. Currently, the yard waste pickup begins in April.

  • Yard waste collection usually begins in April and runs through mid-December.
  • Only tree clippings, brushes, and brunches are allowed.
  • You must put your yard waste in biodegradable bags.
  • Brush must not be longer than 4 feet in length or larger than 2 inches in diameter.
  • Christmas trees are picked between the first two weeks in January.

Keep in mind that it is a violation to place your yard or green waste in front of any vacant property. In case of repeated violations, a ticket will be issued.
